Aged-looking place and certainly the pub is small and cosy with wood beans, wobbly ceiling, carpet and open fireplace. Four ales, fairly mainstream with little style variety – Wye Valley Butty, Tribute, OSH and Butcombe Rare Breed; a half of the latter was serviceable (NBSS 2.5) served-up by stereotypical Saffer staff. Of bigger interest were the scotch eggs, which I discovered were fabulous. I expected a bit more from this one but saying that, it’s easily the best pub in town. GBG listed.

Spoiled for choice in Upton but I ignored the riverside pubs and went for this one - dating back to 1601.
Four real ales - Doom Bar, Tribute, Hobsons and the chosen Timothy Taylor. Perfect pint.
My kind of pub.

Over the years I have been to the Anchor many times, always a great pub! I hear that my old chum Howard Hill-Lines is a regular there these day's! Well, if the place attracts that sort of pedigree, cant be bad, he is probably the best publican/hotelier I've ever come across! Well done for pulling such an esteemed client. Steve, Algarve, Portugal. X
