The former brewery tap for Cannon Royall Brewery, which was just opposite, this pub was renamed in honour of the nearby racecourse. There are multiple pictures of racehorses on the walls.
These days, this is a busy backstreet locals boozer, with Wainwright being the only real ale. Quite a few locals were in on our early Friday evening visit, perhaps drawn in by a complimentary buffet, unless we gatecrashed a private party.
Service was particularly slow. The landlord was busy placing dozens of glasses he'd just collected into a dishwasher, instead of serving waiting customers. I understand the need to replenish glasses, but surely not at the expense of waiting customers if there are still glasses available to serve with!
This pub is well hidden away and is clearly popular. But it's not one I'll search out again.
