On the road leading to & from the White Horse, you'll first see the car park and then there's a few benches outside, these popular with smokers, as the aroma will confirm. Enter to a small bar which seems crowded just with half a dozen chatty locals (as ever, one is chattier than the rest of them put together). The saloon does extend into a bit more space, and there's a dining room to the right.
Beer-wise, you get two local ales (a Best and an APA), these priced at just £3.50. The lagers, especially 1664 seem more popular, though it's notable that two of these are from ABK, which isn't common, while a couple more taps are pouring Brooklyn beers, though I doubt any of the regular crowd are up for the Stonewall Session IPA, judging by the overheard conversation.
Worth looking in if you're heading to or from the hill.

Substantial and mildly upmarket place in the backstreets (which I guess was the centre of the village, many moons ago). There’s a dining room on the right and a bar to the left which is decorated in ‘farmhouse lite’; scrubbed wood tables, stove, old pump clips on beams. An oddity were the boxes of trivia cards on each table, which to be fair helped pass the time a bit. The garden is sizeable and pretty, looks a good bet for the summer months Two cask on over three pumps, Sharps Doom Bar and Twisted Three and Six (NBSS 3.5 – in good nick but a pretty bland brew) which was labelled as an austerity wallet-buster or something and to be fair it was pretty cheap. Polite service and the place is GBG'23 listed. Tidy pub and the missus was rather keen.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Horse & Groom
Quite a substantial side-street pub, with a refurbished bar featuring an attractive mixture of modern / traditional furniture and decor. Separate restaurant. Alfred Room in an outbuilding. Small patio. Beer garden to rear of car park. Two real ales on handpump: Doom bar and Butcombe Christmas Steps (£3.30).
