Located towards the outer edge of the Old Town and just past all the trendy new craft beer bars, this is a much more traditional pub and looks as though it may perhaps have been an old coaching inn at one point going on the opening to the left of the pub leading to a courtyard.

Internally it’s much bigger than expected, extending some considerable way back. The front bar which includes the bar counter was quite traditional, if perhaps a little basic in appearance with some sort of wood strip on the floors, whitewashed ceilings and walls, and pale brown wood panelling on the lower part of the walls. This then extended in a sideways U-shape around the bar counter, with the rear section being broadly similar in terms of décor, as well as housing a further bar counter. Some wooden partitioning had been used to segregate the space somewhat, and there was also some wood panelling on some of the walls. A number of rather generic pictures were dotted around the walls, in addition to a wall mounted touch screen jukebox and a darts board. Beyond this was a further large room although this was in darkness so is perhaps used as a function room or when they’re very busy. From a quick glance in here it looked quite pleasant with exposed stone walling, a large chimney breast with wood burning stove and a further mezzanine level above.

Beers on tap were all from Wadworth’s with their 6X, Henry’s IPA, Old Timer and Horizon whilst a further pump appeared unused. The solitary cider meanwhile was Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, whilst there was certainly nothing at all wrong with this pub, somehow it just seemed a little lacking in character and I wouldn’t make a point of rushing back.

Not too much change here in the intervening years. It’s quite characterful and felt nicely laid-back. Four cask on the go, 3x Waddies and one I’d never heard of. The Horizon was shifting so I followed the herd and got an exceptionally good pint for my decision – NBSS 4. Friendly young barmaid with a smile. This remains one of Swindon’s better bets for quality cask – you can safely ignore the local CAMRA branch’s GBG picks on the whole.

Two bar Waddies pub with a fair number of theirs on and a couple that look like they’re coming directly from the wood but local CAMRA say otherwise - misleading dispense?? Décor consisted of lots of wood panelling. Friendly guv'nor. Decent side patio. Quizzer needs a good shove to get your winnings out. My Swordfish was one of the better beers of the day. It’s worth a stop if you’ve gone up the hill. Rated 7

A Wadworth pub of mixed character, modernised but in a traditional style, with some additions of Old pub fittings it felt quite pleasant. Six beers on ,all from Waddies so I opted for a Horizon, not particularly interesting but decent enough. Not a bad pub and although the owners beers are not my favourite I'd be happy to pop back for a pint.
