A very impressive looking set of buildings, bits of which are apparently from the 13th century. An old coaching inn, enter through a cobbled courtyard and the bar is accessible via reception. It’s all is quite dull and lacks character, long and narrow with neutral tones. Three ales on from the Marstons stable, Wychwood Dirty Tackle, Banks Amber (awful) and Ringwood Best (much better). Horse racing on the TV, some of the people in here may actually own one. A shame this is such a dull place serving up some grotty ale, it could really be quite a draw with a bit of imagination. A tick’s a tick, I suppose.

An impressive frontage and courtyard to the hotel isn't repeated in the 1220 Bar itself,to one side of the courtyard its a simple nondiscript single room with ordinary seating throughout, the bar has three handpumps, these were offering Ringwood Razorback, Banks Amber Ale and an interesting and challenging Revisionist Salted Caramel Tawny Ale, the rather dapper and professional bar keeper offered a taster before purchace stressing its an acquirred taste, he was right, but I did manage one.Its not really the sort of place I would return to despite the chance of something a little less ordinary to drink.

An historic 13th Century coaching inn, one of the best preserved in Britain, now a Best Western franchise. Entry is via a cobbled courtyard with an impressive floral display, while there is a vehicle entrance at the back. The collection of unusual antiques, including a skeleton clock carved by Spanish POWs give it a refined air. Food is good and the accommodation is most acceptable given the age and irregularity of the structure. It's comfy, friendly, annoyingly and unnecessarily corporate thanks to the BW franchise. There were 3 ales on in the annoyingly named 1221 Bar – Ringwood Best and Red Lion Celebration (AKA GK IPA) were both very well kept. A good place to stay and a decent start to a crawl.
