A traditional village pub, cottage style but with internal walls replaced by RSJs. There were five hand pumps with four cask beers on when I was here. I had a beer called Red Rocket from a local microbrewery called Morton Collins, which was in very good condition but not really my sort of beer. I consoled myself by benefiting from the very warm real fire. This seemed to be the most publike of Sandal's four that I visited on this trip, with mainly locals, some of them ancient parents being driven to the pub by their middle-aged offspring. I should be so lucky.

A traditional, medium sized pub, next to a busy main road. The interior is broadly L-shaped and has obviously been opened up and extended down the years. There’s a solid, comfortable feel to the place, with lots of exposed brick, heavy wallpaper and plenty of old prints and photos. However, some of the replacement beams have been a little overworked in an attempt to appear genuine and the extension, to the right of the bar, is a little overdone with its cottage style dressers and ‘country’ knick-knacks. Outside, there are several benches to the front and an enclosed beer garden to the rear.
Four hand pumps at the bar, with two devoted to John Smith’s and one each for Taylor’s ‘Golden Best’ and Theakston’s Best. Unfortunately, my pint of Golden Best was very tired indeed, a marked contrast in quality compared to the last time I visited. However, the barman was friendly and welcoming and there was a decent atmosphere when I called on a recent Wednesday lunchtime, with a brisk trade being done in traditional pub grub. (Sausages & Mash, Lasagne etc. No gastro pretensions here.) I suspect several were using the Star as a pit stop, having done their shop at Asda, close by. The pub is also handy for several local restaurants and next door to Sandal RUFC.
Overall, it’s an average, inoffensive sort of place. With two, up-market, food led, pubs close by, it probably feels no need to compete on that front, but something a little more adventurous on the beer front might help its cause no end. At present, there’s very little that would make me want to call again.
