The Albion is quite a rare beast, in that it is one of only four Sam Smith’s pubs in the greater Wakefield area and the only one close to the city centre. The exterior is quite striking, with its unusual concave façade and large central bay window. Internally, there are four drinking areas, with two either side of the centrally located bar. Although the pub has been opened up down the years, those to the right maintain more of a public bar feel, with a pool table in the far raised area and a darts board next to the bar. Throughout the pub, there are upholstered wall benches, with a mixture of tables, giving the pub a comfortable, traditional feel.
At the bar there were the usual suspects, with Old Brewery Bitter on cask, plus Sovereign Bitter, Dark Mild, Entire Stout and Alpine Lager on keg. The OBB was in good condition and with an expected low price of £1.80. However, also as expected was the excessively cold serving temperature. I can’t think of a Sam Smith’s pub anywhere that doesn’t serve its OBB overly chilled. Baffling.
Service from the friendly young barmaid was a highlight. Her ability to remember what punters were drinking, as they approached the bar, was quietly impressive. A small touch, but undoubtedly one that makes drinkers feel valued.
A lively teatime atmosphere when I called midweek, with lots of good natured banter flying about. Although technically a roadside pub, its position on the edge of one of Wakefield’s largest estates does give it the feel of a real community local. Overall, I rather enjoyed calling at The Albion, but the chances of a return visit are slim, as Sam’s beers just don’t float my boat, unfortunately.
