A large, 19th century hotel at the crossroads just north of the station. The room on the Station Lane side, which must surely have been two or more rooms originally, is the dining room, with part of the bar counter in a corner. Through the unmarked door to the right is a small lobby with external door and the door through to the public bar or lounge; again, I suspect this must have been two rooms back in the day. There's a pool table and table football, and a wooden plinth whose only function appeared to be to provide a place for drinkers to put down their glasses between swigs. The decor and furnishings were plain but in good condition, and the large windows gave an impression of light even in January. I was here for a pre-season match between Featherstone Rovers and Leeds Rhinos; Fev fans hate Rhinos fans with a vengeance, but on the TV were Leeds United playing at West Ham and there was a big cheer when they scored. OK, so maybe the cheer was from Rhinos fans, but at least no one booed and no fighting broke out.
There was an unclipped hand pump on the bar, but when I enquired I was told they were serving from the bar in the dining room (I think the line was being cleaned, as I saw it being pulled through later). The beer, at first anonymous, was pretty good, and on venturing back through for a second go at it, I found it was Copper Dragon Scotts 1816 pale ale 4.1%, just £3.10 a pint. This was a less crowded pub than the Railway and I found it more congenial. Having a real ale helped of course.
