The only pub in Knottingley that serves real ale, so quite clearly the best pub for miles around, but it would be a stand out pub anywhere. With its beer garden having plenty of bench tables beside the canal it will be pretty busy in warmer weather (when there are four or five beers on) but it was pretty cold for today's visit. There's a small tap room to the left with five hand pumps, but the same three beers were repeated in the much larger room to the right. Here there's a pool table, and two fireplaces confirming that this has been knocked through from previously smaller rooms. The beers were all from Marston's. I went for Hobgoblin Gold, and when this proved to be in excellent condition I tried the 61 Deep as well. I told the licensee that the Gold was the best I'd ever had of this beer, to which he responded with a five minute discourse on how easy it is to keep cask beers, but I could tell he was pleased (NBSS 4.5). The 61 was almost as good, but this one lacked the subtlety of the Gold - probably the brewer's fault rather than the cellarman. Definitely worth the trip to Knottingley.

The Steam Packet’s location by the Knottingley and Goole Canal is taken advantage of by a decked seating area that overlooks the waterway. A slope runs down to the bank where I imagine mooring was once achievable, but the rocks and uneven surface make it look a little treacherous. The pub is found across a large car park which indicated that food would be available. In truth the only food I saw advertised was the Sunday lunch which is available from midday until 16:00 and is very reasonably priced at £6 for adults and £4 for children.
The interior consists of a public bar with dartboard to the left and larger lounge bar with pool table to the right. I do not recall any televisions and live sport was not advertised. There was some background music playing and I noted that a function room that is available for free hire. There is a quiz every Thursday from 20:00 and there is a late license until midnight on Friday/Saturday and until 23:00 on Sundays.
Standard keg products are available from the bar that also supports a couple of hand pumps. During my visit on Monday afternoon last week these were drawing Wychwood’s Jester Jack and Whitstable Brewery’s Rakau Single Hop. I found the service to be very friendly and I would enjoy a revisit to this pub.
