I was here in late December 2022 but somehow neglected to write a review. The beer I had on that occasion was absolutely gorgeous (NBSS 4.5) but this is my first opportunity to repeat the experience. There are seven hand pumps, featuring all Yorkshire brews. I went for one from Goose Eye and another from Daleside, both good or better but not outstanding. Maybe my taste buds were affected by the very loud anti-immigrant talk going on in another corner, which - no exaggeration - went fairly rapidly from "send them back" to "leave the court of human rights" to "meet them on the beach with spears and flamethrowers". Apart from that, this is a lovely pub with well kept beers at reasonable prices.

Slightly isolated from the town centre, stone built and partially covered in rough cast, opening hours are 4-11 Monday to Thursday (11:30 Friday/ Saturday) and 12-10:30 on Sunday. These are shown on a board outside which also cautions you against bad language, you will be ejected by the ex policeman landlord if you swear. A very traditional pub in front room style in the front room, up a few steps is a sitting area adorned with police memorabilia and to the side is another sitting room. Traditionally furnished with bench seating, Britannias and stools. The counter serves a mix of Taylors and mainly Yorkshire micros, Naylors, Roosters and Yorkshire Dales on my visit, the pump clips on the ceiling reveal a good array of guests. Good Beer Guide listed and not one to be missed by traditional pub lovers.

A wonderful pub with friendly staff (including Barry the Landlord) No TV, no games machines, good beer and you can have a conversation with the person next to you without shouting. Look out for the Sunday savers
