A good looking pub opposite the eponymous rock, separated from it by the busy A616. It opens at 4pm during the week, and a breakaway group from a nearby funeral had staked their claim to be first through the door. On hearing that my train was due to leave 20 minutes after opening time they very sportingly allowed me to be the pioneer. I went for the Thwaites IPA (NBSS 3.5, £4.25/pint), which is confusingly described on the pump clip as an "English IPA with citra", a notoriously American hop. Anyway, it was very easy drinking, which was just as well given my time constraints. This is a very pleasant pub and if you don't mind the nearly half mile steep hill back to the station, well worth a visit.
