Our friend who accompanied the two of us here in 2012 died four years later, so our visit here late last year was partly in remembrance. He did tell some stories about seeing two different women at the same time in different parts of Denby Dale back in the day - apparently he was quite a "babe magnet". Oh how we laughed.
If we'd known the two pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord would turn out to be vinegar we'd have just given the place the swerve it deserves. I suppose it was worth it to be able to report that the interior has been totally transformed, with the bar where the main seating area used to be. In other respects, the background music was, if anything, even worse than last time, though the licensee claimed not to have been here that long ago. He gave us a replacement beer (Marstons 61 Deep) with something between an apology and a shrug. He knew quite well that the beer had gone, he was just trying to see if he could get away with it. I won't say I hope he goes out of business, as that would be mean, but he should do us real ale drinkers a favour and stick to selling lager.

A one-roomed pub with modern floorboards replacing what I am reliably informed was a warren of small rooms in days gone by, the White Hart is nevertheless a pleasant village pub, with a fireplace on the left-hand wall and comfortable chairs or pouffes at tables dotted randomly about. There were three real ales available when we visited: Tetleys Bitter, Black Sheep Bitter and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. Not beers to set the pulse racing, perhaps, but impeccably served and in a relaxed atmosphere, can't be faulted. I'd have a bone to pick about the pretty awful 60s pop music on the CD player, but presumably that's to someone's taste so I'll leave it alone on this occasion.

Set in the village of Denby Dale, famous for its world record-breaking pies and an engineering marvel of a viaduct, The White Hart is a small traditional roadside pub perched invitingly on the bank of a steep junction, just back from the main road.
Internally, it’s one open plan space, but with a cosy corner to the left of the bar and a small wood panelled recess to the right. Traditional with a modern twist is probably the best way to describe the décor. There’s a cosy low ceiling with heavy beams, a laminated floor, heavy modern wallpapers and leather sofas alongside the wall settles and traditional tables and chairs. Walls are covered with art prints and old photos of the village, many featuring previous pie bakes. To the right of the bar there’s a pool table, and to the left the inevitable flat screen TV, above a decent looking real fire.
Three pumps at the bar, featuring Black Sheep Bitter, Tetley Bitter and Harviestoun ‘Bitter & Twisted’. The Harviestoun was in good nick and just the job after a two-hour walk. Bar staff were warm and welcoming, even helping me to carry drinks over to our table. Not particularly busy when we called Sunday afternoon, but all very relaxed with chatty regulars.
I wasn’t a huge fan last time I called, particularly regarding the décor, but things appeared to have subtly changed for the better (on several fronts). I came away this time thinking that the White Hart was a decent, friendly community local and definitely worth another visit next time I’m in the area.
