This was a bit of a lucky dip time killer before catching a train so I didn’t really get a real feel for the place over my hurried pint (and much needed toilet break!).
The pub dates from around 1800 and was originally a pair of houses before becoming a pub called the Town Hall Tavern. The interior is split into two with a central bar and the two original buildingsare still very much evident. One side contains the main bar area with a pool table section to the rear. The second bar is slightly raised and is housed in what appears to have been the original pub given the frontage. The interior is largely carpeted with banquette seating and traditional décor and furnishings. I did note a 1954 Rugby League programme among the items on display.
Just the 2 ales were available, Morland Old Golden Hen and Leeds Yorkshire Gold, the latter of which was fine and reasonably priced.
Whilst it was more of a functional visit than an extended stay, I found it to be a perfectly presentable and welcoming enough and certainly a decent enough place to pop into if passing.

A good looking stone built pub that takes its name from the street leading to the West Gate of the Piece Hall. The ornate frontage used to be the Town Hall Tavern with which the Westgate was merged about 50 years ago. Inside is a split level pub with the downstairs area being the main bar and a separate area with a pool table. The upstairs area is a comfortable lounge. The friendly barmaid/landlady and locals made this a welcoming place. Three handpumps selling Tetleys, Hobgoblin & OSH so it doesn't look like these change as they were the same when OB visited 5 months ago. The Hobgoblin was a decent pint though and this is one of the better pubs in central Halifax. It's also listed in the GBG2010.

nice traditional town centre boozer with a good local following. Built on two levels with a central servery, it has three handpumps with very good Tetleys, Hobgoblin and Old Speckled Hen plus a keg range. Traditionally furnished with Britannia tables, benches and stools in red plush with Axminster type carpet. Walls in tobacco colour with the inevitable old photos. The staff are very much on the ball and the locals a mix of ages. One side of the lower section is seating the other is home to a pool table and the door to a rather ripe smelling Gents.
