Quite a grand looking pub in a King Cross backstreet not far from the Wainhouse Tower, a local landmark. Parking is either on the streets outside or in a car park opposite on a lane heading back up the hill.
Entering at the corner of the building, you can choose between a lower bar or an upper bar. We chose the upper bar, which was quite spacious and included a pool table and two dartboards. The interior decor is nothing special, especially if you have admired the exterior. However, the vast array of pumpclips on the walls and ceilings indicates the large number and variety of guest beers that have appeared here.
7 handpulls are spread across the 2 bars. 6 beers were on for our visit. Rudgate Wainhouse Bitter is the house beer. Also on were Rudgate Jorvik Blonde, Roosters Three French Hens, Kent Bravo & Mallinson's Porter & Wappy Nick.
We had decided to eat here and ordered 3 burgers. All were good, although mine was just too big to finish. They were freshly cooked.

Two-tier boozer in an unusual and attractive building (Built in 1877 as a home for the industrialist J E Wainhouse), looming and perched high with a view across the valley. Small lower bar and a larger upper with pool and darts. Dull grey décor in the front area and the rear is hardly a revelation either. Six pumps (all labelled by hand!) though very samey style wise. My Mallinsons Wappy Nick was in decent shape (NBSS 3) and served-up by a friendly barmaid. It's fine if you’re a local but I wouldn’t see the need to make the effort to get out here from the town centre a second time, regardless of its GBG listing.

The Wainhouse Tavern is a large grand looking pub that is a good slog walking uphill from Sowerby Bridge.
Once inside there is a very smart and cosy lounge to the front, this is a smallish oblong shaped room, which is carpeted and has very comfy bench seating and small stools, there was a TV to the left showing music videos.
There is a separate bar room to the rear which is up a few steps, this room is large and had a pool tables to the rear.
This pub used to be a Thwaites tied house, but the outside signage now says Free House, there three real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Geeves Topaz which went down very well, the other beers were Thwaites Wainwright and an house beer called Wainhouse Bitter.
This is a very pleasant and comfortable pub, well worth the walk.
