A locals pub tucked away in the steep hills between Halifax and Sowerby. I dropped down what felt like a vertical cliff from the Big Six, eventually finding this magnificent looking pub, but once inside it’s.. a bit of a letdown. Lovely staff, 6 ales and excellent beer quality but grey washed and sterilised feel to the interior. Still, probably worth calling in if you’re passing by…

A decent pub this one, pity it was dark on our recent visit, so couldn't take in the splendour of the sandstone exterior. We found our way into the front bar which was very comfortable and felt slightly like a front lounge in a grand hotel. This front bar mainly attracted the middle to older drinkers along with their dogs.
The rear lounge was massive and very busy with the younger crowd having a beer and a bite to eat.
Six handpumps, serving Wainwright, Titanic Plum Porter, Wappy Nick Session Blonde, Mallinsons Citra, Kent Tech Noir American Porter and Rudgate Evil Elf. The beer prices in here were very reasonable, the Kent American Porter was £4.40 a pint for a 6.1%.

This pub has been well described by the previous reviewer, which saves me the trouble. I ascended to the upper bar, which was almost deserted, but it had four beers on, and the remainder listed above on the bar pelmet. After being served I walked through to the livelier front bar, where the Mallinsons Wappy Nick was duplicated, plus two others making six beers (see photos). My Roosters Yankee was not as good as I have had in other pubs, and nothing like as good as the beer I'd come from in the Big Six, but there was nothing wrong with it so it's an NBSS 3. If all my pubs had been this good, I'd have called it a good day out, but after the Big Six and before that the Cross Keys, this felt like a bit of a let down.
