An attractive stone built pub in an older stone terrace of shops, on entering you can see this is a cut above the pubs further down the hill or perhaps just more acceptable to middle class tastes? Whatever your prejudices it’s a low ceilinged place, slightly open plan but dividing roughly into three parts. Tasteful decor in each part and no grey, battleship or otherwise. To the left and right are seating areas with banquette and stools seating at wooden and Britannia tables, the right hand area is cosier and has a screen. Ahead is the bar area with a straight counter to the side, home to four hand pumps, Taylor’s Landlord and Boltmaker plus Saltaire Blonde and an unclipped. My Boltmaker was average in spite of the Cask Marque approval. A nice point was the Cask Marque certificate was actually accessible for a change, I’ll get another bloody bottle opener yet! Polite staff and punters, perhaps less lively than other Eccleshill pubs but ok in polite company.

Te Royal Oak is a decent looking stone built pub that is situated in Eccleshil's small shopping area.
Once inside the pub has two separate rooms,i had a drink in the lounge which is to the front, this room is irregular in shape, the bar faces, the seating is comfy bench type and small stools, the ceiling is beamed.
There is a smaller oblong shaped bar room to the rear.
There were three real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Saltaire Blonde which went down well, the other beers were Taylor Landlord and Tetley Cask.
Both rooms were very busy giving the pub a good atmosphere, decent background music was playing.
This is a comfortable and cosy pub to have a drink in.
