Now known as The Moon, the pub is on two levels, along with a garden. The bar is on the upper level, accessed from the street. There are chairs and sofas and, while most of the area is carpeted, it wasn't one of those sticky old ones where you have to wipe your feet on the way out. Down a few steps at the rear, there's a carvery.
There is an emphasis on food here, but the drinker is not neglected: three ales were available on my visit: 2 from Sussex and one all the way from Cornwall (you can guess which it was). I chose Arundel Sussex Gold over the Harvey's Best and would happily have stayed for one or two more.
The Moon seems to me a reasonable choice whether you're passing through on the busy main road, or walking or riding high on the Downs above.

Great food and good value for money. The landlord, Richard, is very personable and nothing is too much trouble. If only all pubs were like this......
