A bit hidden away - even some folk in the area aren't aware - down a quiet lane on the edge of the affluent village of West Chiltington. Just a single large room, tending more towards dining as you get away from the bar, carpeted throughout in traditional style.
The Five Bells is a CAMRA favourite, with 5 ales including Harvey's Sussex (you won't be surprised to hear) and Palmers among them. I was surprised to note sparklers in use, but my pint of Long Man Copper Top survived the ordeal en-route to the glass and slipped down nicely.
The pub was quiet for a Saturday evening, although it's quite possible they do rather better at lunchtimes.
If you should, by chance, find yourself in Smock Alley, or just the vaguely West Chilt. area, I'd recommend a visit.

Extremely attractive old building with leaded windows and lots of attendant greenery. The pub has a fairly timeless character about it, most of the place feels like it's barely changed since the 1940's. The well-heeled interior is carpeted with traditional wooden furnishings and period décor. Five ales on offer (Arundel Mild, TT Landlord, Arkells Kingsdown, Palmers Copper, Harveys Best) in good shape. The friendly landlord has been running the place for the last 25 years.
A great one to find in the summer for a session or to relax in. Recommended.
