The Nags head has a nice traditional herringbone floored bar with booths across the front wall and banquettes up the left, both of which are faced by a wooden L-shaped serving counter that supports standard and premium keg alongside Neck Oil and five hand pumps, four of which were in used drawing Harveys’ Best, St Austell’s Tribute and Proper Job and Fuller’s London Pride. I went for the Pride that was just about passable, I think it must have been the first of the day having not been pulled through. There are a couple of televisions in the bar area that were airing the early kick-off match on TNT Sports, and there’s a large tv in a raised flagstone floored open plan seating area at the rear. In the left rear is a surprisingly large restaurant with some waiting staff, oddly it seemed to be empty at lunchtime on a Saturday. I thought it was ok in here and I’d probably stick my head in again if passing.

Really old pub in The Hornet part of Chichester, full of character and always very busy, they do serve up to four real ales including St Austell Proper Job, the only downside to this pub is the prices £5.40 for a pint of standard cider that's £1.00 more then I payed for a pint of Aspell cider in The Old Cross. You expect to pay a little more for a drink in these kind of pubs but £5.00 a pint is enough for any establisment.

I was a bit confused by the Nags Head and initially couldn’t work out if it was a pub, a restaurant or a hotel. And my conclusion was that actually it is trying to be all three. The mock Tudor exterior certainly makes it look like a Historic Inn from the outside and fortunately this is carried on when entering the traditional rustic wood panelled front bar with its separate smaller bench seating areas and traditional bar counter. But when you move from this the rustic ambience disappears to be replaced by something altogether more modern and different. The big sports lounge with large pull down screen, lounge settee area and Ikea style plain wooden tables and chairs is more akin to a modern hotel and the large dining room conservatory extension had more the feel of a works refectory to me. And beyond this was a very pleasant large walled patio garden area.
It is a 10 room hotel, but for staying or eating here best to look at Trip advisor for how it performs in those regards.
As a pub the front bar, although clearly largely not original, is a comfortable place for a pint and in that respect there are 5 Ale pumps and Flowers, Directors, London Pride, Young’s Special and Hop Back Summer Lightning were available. So not the most exciting line up , but decent enough and the Summer Lightning was well kept.
Personally I wouldn’t choose this place over some of the more traditional pubs in town, but it was decent enough.
