If I was to close my eyes to try and imagine a typical seaside pub on the outskirts of town it wouldn’t be that far removed from the weather boarded Cabin. The pub sits behind a picnic table lined beer garden that is enclosed by a waist high brick wall. Over the road from the pub is a car park for the use of patrons only, although there were more cars parked up than there were customers in the pub. My visit was on a recent wind swept Saturday afternoon when the sound of the waves hitting the shoreline was very audible. I love the smell of sea air, but to be honest I was glad to get into the pub away from the gusts.
The interior of the pub is open plan with a bar that runs along the rear wall. A canoe hangs from the ceiling and unsurprisingly there is a nautical theme that runs throughout, although it is not gimmicky. Out of the three pubs in Middleton-on-Sea I would imagine that this is the one the local fisherman would call home. At the front of the pub to the left is a dartboard and jukebox in an area of pew seating with tables that were set for dining. To the right is a raised area that houses a pool table and some equipment for hosting live music on Saturday evenings. Televisions are located throughout and Sky Sports is advertised. During my visit Olympics was being aired on a TV by the bar and the others were turned off. Wi-Fi is available.
The bar supports a standard keg range and I counted four hand pumps which were drawing Sharp’s Doom bar, Hop Back’s Summer Lightning, Cotleigh’s Golden Seahawk and Mordue Brewery’s Workie Ticket. Pub food is available and local fish and seafood is advertised. The kitchen is closed on Mondays; is open from midday to 14:30 and 18:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Friday and is open from midday until 15:00 on Saturday and Sunday. I found the service to be very friendly and would enjoy a return visit if in the area.
