Excellent old pub, popular with walkers and handy for the Chalkpits museum and station. The bar has a stone floor and lots of woodwork, with a lounge/dining area leading off. Outside there are some tables to the front and a nice garden behind. Draught beers at time of visit were Harvey's Best, Long Man Long Blonde and Tribute, and in excellent condition (Cask Marque). Food not sampled but looked good. Well worth visiting. Note - if approaching from the railway bridge, cut through the little gate in the hedge.

With the first half of the South Downs Way done, I staggered into this place as it is next to the station.
Delightful setting, nice gardens and inside all olde worlde.
Timothy Taylor Landlord was to die for - best I have had outside Yorkshire.
Food was pricey but good quality.
Perfect place to end my walk.

We stopped off in this pub after a walk around the lovely village of Amberley and along the River Arun. It has a very simple layout, with the entrance taking you into a small public bar with a limited amount of seating and a short bar counter. A small TV screen was showing six nations rugby to a decent sized group of locals, so we moved through to the second room to the right hand side of the pub which was full of tables set up ready for diners. The room is in two notional sections, separated by a wide, purple archway, which may well have been a dividing wall in the past. Between the two rooms there is a fireplace which was lit as the sun disappeared for the day.
Three ales were available on my visit - WJ King King's Old Ale, Harvey’s Best and Skinners Betty Stogs. I tried the King’s and Skinners and found both to be in very good condition. We tried some food here as well, with main meals between £8-10 and specials around £12-15. My sausage and mash with vegetable crisps was very good indeed and I thought the service from both kitchen and bar was very friendly and helpful.
I really enjoyed this pub and thought it made the perfect pit-stop for our day's walking. Having missed our train back to London by a matter of minutes, it was a bit of a no-brainer to head back here (the pub being next door to the station) and enjoy one more drink.
