The Swan is a Chef & Brewer pub adjacent to the Premier Inn North East at the very top of Warrington. The building actually looks inviting with a brewer’s Tudor first floor and worn brick below. There’s lots of picnic tables outside, but the passing road is very busy so it’s not the best spot for al fresco drinking. The split-level multi-roomed interior is much more characterful than this chain normally offers, in fact I would dare to say that it actually feels like a proper pub rather than an eating hole. There’s even some tiled flooring and exposed brick, and no sign of a carvery! Premium keg was available alongside Greene King Old Speckled Hen and IPA which were doubled up on the four hand pumps. While at the Premier inn a mile to the south on the other side of Stump Cross roundabout I asked the receptionist about the closure of their C&B, the Winwick Quay. She said she was surprised about the closure because they were doing good business with locals from the estate across the A49. However, after visiting the Swan I can see why they kept this pub instead because it is head and shoulders above any other C&B I can remember visiting.

19/03/11. Saturday evening 7pm not booked - table for two. At busy times they ask you wait to be seated and although tables are numbered there is waiter service. We both had Gammon, Egg and chips but the menu is very varied with lots of choice. Prices are mid range from £6 up to £15 for steaks etc. Drinks arrived quickly and food followed shortly afterwards. Meal was perfectly edible but there was a lot of fat on both gammon pieces. Portions were a good size and filled us nicely. Deserts ranged from £2.95 upwards although the serving of custard in very small pots was rather measly. Ambiance was very nice with good temperature and noise level was not too excessive. Waitress service was very polite and efficient but they do not allow tips to be added when paying by credit card. All in all a very pleasurable experience.
