Apparently my last visit was as long ago as 2018, so I felt justified in making a revisit towards the end of November. The place has changed hands and had a bit of a spruce up internally since my last visit, but is still very much a traditional pub and retains the two separate rooms with central bar. This was a mid week lunch time visit, and it was pretty busy, the clientele mainly consisting of old codgers.

Eight cask ales on, split across the two bars. There is a chalk board to let you know what's available. Most cask ales were around the £4 a pint mark; cash and cards accepted.

Music was playing but the conversation was louder. A gem for those seeking out a traditional boozer with the bonus of a decent cask ale selection.

It's been a while since I've been here, and I've a train cancellation to thank for the opportunity. There are nine beers listed on the blackboard, with four on the bar in the room on the left, of which Purple Moose Cwrw Madog (or Maddock's Beer) caught my eye. It's an unspectacular brew, but in very good condition (NBSS 3.5), the second swig being an improvement on my initial sip. This is an unusual town centre real ale pub, where lager and Guinness are more often the drink of choice, with beer quality good enough to get in the Good Beer Guide. I really must come here more often.

A classic tiled exterior promises great things, alongside its GBG listing. Two rooms inside, the right side is a dimly-lit affair with little of note. Four cask here and my Liverpool Dark Mode wasn't anywhere near GBG quality (NBSS 1.5). The other bar is lighter and brighter with pub carpet, decent lighting and a bit of life -although when you look up dilapidations are evident. Another four cask round here that were different to the other bar but again majoring on LBC. I tried a Liverpool IPA from this bar which was much better than the previous muck (NBSS 3.5) and served-up by an efficient barmaid. Overall it didn't really deliver – felt like there were too many beers on and that interior desperately needs some work. A shame, as I really wanted to like it.
