I've been here before, on a day out in Digbeth that included the now demolished Eagle & Tun, though I wrote no reviews that day. My memory was fairly hazy for some reason, so I've been meaning to get back here, especially after hearing the pub had been refurbished and reopened despite being (almost) in a building site. There are 10 hand pumps, one advertising a cider, and the remainder offering seven beers (two pump clips doubled). I went for a Burton Bridge beer on the far left, but it was about as tired as I felt myself after 10 pubs in Coventry, while the beer had only been sitting in the cellar. (The barman failed to understand me when I said "Burton Bridge", but this may not have been just because no one had asked for this beer since he came on shift.) I'll compromise by saying that me and the beer were equally tired and call it "good enough" but not even close to the best of the day.

I applaud the owners for maintaining this important building, and I hope they keep it going to eventually see a train enter Curzon Street station. And the pub interior is well preserved but not essential viewing in my opinion. Glad I came though.

Gloriously traditional pub whose future hung in the balance for some time but thankfully they realised the value of the site next to the HS2 station and it has been nicely restored. High ceilings, ceramics and etched glass abound. 8 or 9 assorted ales can be found on the row of handpumps. including a well-kept Bass and a mixture of mainstream and craft brews. My only slight grumble was the overpriced, if very nice, cobs. Recommended.

This is a terrific old-style central Birmingham pub, though a bit light on the heating on this wet and windy day, it has to be said.

10 pumps (1 for Sea cider) offer a range of ales mostly from smaller breweries, though you can also have Bass or Landlord. One of the ales on offer when I visited was called HS2 Pale and, while The Woodman is very handily placed for the station, I decided not to wait the 8 years or so for the next High-Speed and went in search of a not-cancelled train from New Street a little further away.

Well worth a visit, though possibly not in the depths of winter.
