The Victoria has a central bar with three serving counters that serve three bars where Aritha Franklin and the like can be heard from the sound system. The largest bar is through the left-hand door where a couple of high tables sit adjacent and a blue banquette with tables runs up the external wall opposite the wooden topped bar that has purple cushioned inserts that seem to be the theme throughout. Steps climb up to a smaller rear bar where tables sit in the window and then steps descend to the right-hand bar where more banquettes with tables are found around a fireplace that is lit by fairy lights. There is a flight of stairs up to the first floor, but this was roped off during a recent midweek afternoon visit when I was the only customer for the duration of my stay. The draught options from the two friendly barmen were standard, premium and mainstream craft keg alongside five hand pumps that were badged with Purity Brewing’s Pure UBU and Mad Goose, Attic Brew Co’s Hearth Mild, Rosie’s Pig and Pig Rhubarb as well as Pulp Mango Daiquiri from the cider boxes behind the counter. Oh how we all laughed when I ordered half a Hearth, well that’s the story I’m telling. This pub certainly has an interesting layout, and I was made to feel welcome, so I’ll pop back in when next passing.

2025: A revisit as part of a Heritage Pub Tour of Birmingham. I learned rumours of a tunnel between the pub and the theatre next door and Charlie Chaplin as a former resident. Beer range was a little pedestrian, with just Ubu and Black Sheep on but apparently, they do the best pisco outside of Peru. More beautiful inside than outside, where it has had a rather severe green paint job, with a bit of gold.
Nice makeover of a Victorian Theatre Bar by the Bitter and Twisted Company.
Lovely decor inside and good ale - a well kept Salopian Golden Thread.

After a mediocre visit here a few years ago I ventured back in based on a couple of recommendations and continued GBG listing. The layout is the same but I think a bit of work has happened inside, I don't recall the plum coloured button back bar frontage for example. Anyway, five pumps all on; Purity Mad Goose, Wye Valley HPA and Butty Thwaites Wainwright and Titanic Plum Porter which wasn’t as good in taste as I've had elsewhere though I suspect brew rather than bar as it was cool and lively (NBSS 3). Anyway, it still didn't do much for me as a pub, feels a bit ‘gloomy Sunday’ and the atmosphere was a bit down at the mouth.

An impressive edifice (even if grey sludge paintwork mutes some of it) and the interior is pretty decent as well, retaining some period features such as the moulded ceiling, leaded stained windows and wrapped bar layout. The right side is more loungey with sofas and tacky tattoo-style wall illustrations. The dark colours and dimmed light might strike some as being somewhat oppressive. Awful rap through the speakers completely spoilt the ambience. An interesting note is that there are shelves above urinals to place your beer, should you feel the need to take it with you. The ale selection was pretty good; Thornbridge Sequoia, Tyne Bank Silver Dollar, Butty Bach and Hand-drawn Monkey Red (which sadly, just like so many other pubs that day, was over-vented and flat but at least had some taste). Friendly barmaid who seemed perplexed by me only having a half. Overall it was worth a quick visit but with the superior-in-every-way Craven Arms two minutes away, I doubt I’d be looking to prioritise this one again next time. 6.5.
