I love a pub with leaded windows so was looking forward to visiting the Sacks of Potatoes which is one of two pubs found on Aston University campus, this one being where you’re more likely for find a more discerning student. The bar area is found to the right where there’s an L-shaped serving counter that supports standard and premium keg alongside Neck Oil and three banks of three hand pumps that were drawing Otter Biiter, decent and an amazing £3.50 a pint, Attic brew Co’s Centro, Wye Valley’s HPA and Lilley’s Rhubarb. The bar area is laminate floored with high tables opposite the counter across the front windows, and down the right side of the counter is a tartan carpeted snug. The large open plan left-hand side of the pub has split-level seating and televisions that were airing horse racing from Cheltenham. The pub grub is just as cheap as the beer with the likes of a burger all coming in at £8. I thought the barman was very friendly, but I was a bit disappointed because the open plan interior didn’t match the expectations I was given by the exterior. That said, this is the better option for a pint than its peer down the road.

Right by Aston University, but a proper pub rather than just a student bar. Partly opened-out, with various different seating areas on slightly different levels in an overall 'L' shape. Anonymous furniture and decor, but it also has some tables out front and a small rear terrace. Various food offers and weekly programme of events. On this first revisit for seven years I found three cask ales - Wye Valley HPA, Titanic's Steerage and the Hop Star from the nearby Silhill (£4.50) - plus a trio of Lilley's ciders available from a total of nine handpumps.

Keen to see if this student haunt of my youth still exists.

Traditional looking pub, painted black externally on ground floor with a cream upper story. Some outside picnic benches.

Inside, typical pub high tables, each with large menu of pub grub. Central U Shaped Bar.

Stained glass/leaded windows were perhaps the most memorable aspect, with the sunlight pouring through.

Two cask on - HPA and Doom Bar. Half an HPA in decent enough condition.

I was the only punter at first on a bank holiday lunch time.

Where are the students :-)
