I will not describe the physical features of the pub, Soup Dragon has done so more than adequately below.

The three real ales I tried, two by Quartz and one I cannot remember the name of were superb. The Henry Tudor was delicious. It is always exciting to walk into a pub and see beers that you've never had before. And a bonus when all three are delicious.

The food was also exceptional. Four of us ate and we were all impressed.

The views across the valley to Stoke Golding are beautiful.

The staff were brilliant, attentive and courteous. The landlord was an ever present and benign presence in the pub.

In short, I loved this place - a great mix of diners and locals in for a pint. A brilliant, comfortable, welcoming pub.

I never give 10/10, but this place deserves it.

This is a detached pub and restuarant, with patio area and a fantastic view over to the Ashby canal. Signs are up saying the pub welcomes horse riders - and there is a trough!; signs are also up saying the pub welcomes cyclists - and there are bike stands! The place was closed for three years, re-opening in 2011 and shaking off the threat of being turned into a private house. The pub has retained the same name since the 1880s, but looks typically Georgian. It sits next to the church. It occupies several buildings, but appears unchanged for 130 years at least. It is in undressed brick, studded with blue bricks and with both rounded and dormer windows, as well as a projecting Tudor-style gallery. The pub has several areas. The malt house restaurant area incorporates the Tudor gallery for further dining space. It has an open roof and is in white, with the same tartan carpet as the rest of the building. There are B&W arty photos on the walls. The main room houses the central island serving bar. There is a stone fire and comfy seat area, but the rest is in white, with old photos and prints on the walls - as well as the off hedgehog toy. Part has foody tables, the other drinky tables. Down a few steps there is a private little room with tapestry on the walls. There was no TV and the music was quiet and general - it was here that i heard the Villa had took the lead against Arsenal! The service was fine and the clientele seemed mainly local at our early visit. Beer; usual tap stuff with Battlefield Brewery's Henry Tudor, Quartz 1485 and Byatts' Phoenix Gold on hhandpull, the first two being decent. A good level of mix between food and pub, modern and traditional. I enjoyed my stop off here - worth a visit
