You know a pub is old when it occupies a spot that has been named after the pub, and this is one of those. Sadly, it has not troubled the scorers on either heritage pub or good beer guide aspects. It's multi-roomed, but is very much a city centre night out pub. I came here at the end of a pub research trip and had split off from the rest of the group when they went in the ferociously noisy Lady Grey. I was in search of a good quaffing ale to expunge the memory of my last beer in the Cumberland Arms, and the Old George serves Bass, so here I was. In fact there were three hand pumps, with another beer from Consett and a third pump clip turned around. My Bass was pretty good (NBSS 3 to 3.5) and went down a treat. It was quite busy here at almost 6pm on a Friday, but not too noisy and still fairly civilised. I wonder what it's like at lunchtime?
