Fantastic long thin room with feature ceiling, snob screens and the bar in the middle tom one wall

Always worth seeing this pub's heritage interior, although there is not a lot of space along the narrow bar, in the front snug or in the tapered rear room. (all with plenty of decorative features). As usual, a good selection of cask ales from the six handpumps, coming from Durham, Hawkshead, Northern Monk's and Brew York in addition to a local pair from Two by Two: Session IPA and Porter (£5.00). Like nearly all of the Sir John Fitzgerald outlets, this one is well worth seeking out.

My first visit for a number of years, and though the pub itself seems largely unchanged the beer offering is rather different to what I remember, which was more mainstream. There were six hand pumps, and while the first two were easily eliminated from consideration (a pina colada IPA from Durham, and Hawkshead's attempt at a Tripel, which I ruled out for lactose and 8% abv respectively), the other four took a bit of thinking about. I ended up with Northern Monk Fresh From, an unusual name for a 3.8% pale in their "single hop" series. It was fine (NBSS 3) but not - as it turns out - particularly memorable. The lad behind the bar was friendly and helpful and answered my questions about whether a hand written pump clip tended to suppress sales: not so much if it's from a well known and popular brewery like Fyne Ales, was the answer.
