No longer a Fitzgerald pub as they were bought out by the Ladhar Group in December 2020. This is a large two roomed pub with a large L shaped lounge and a large sized bar. Four ales on handpump, Anarchy Blonde Star, Anarchy Cult Leader, Doombar and Durham Magus. We went for the Anarchy Blonde Star, top class. The was a comfortable well run pub with friendly staff.

This is a large Fitzgeralds pub located at the bottom end of Chillingham Rd close to the Metro station and the junction with the Shields Rd. A two room format is retained but apart from the couple of pool tables and dartboard in the Bar, the comfort levels are similar, both rooms being carpeted and having similar seating. My guess is that the pub dates from the 20's, perhaps 30's, but it could be older; many original features remain including internal doors and the splendid moulded ceiling.
Decor is pretty minimal, a few posters but there are a few decent old brewery mirrors around, one from Allsops.
The beer range was excellent, but be warned the pumps are not double clipped so you have to wander in and out or trust that the chalkboard listings are up to date.
My Saturday evening visit had Roosters Yankee, Allendale Target, Jarrow Rivet Catcher, The Full Wood Georgian Porter, Belhaven St Andrews, Elland Allied Hop Porter, Cumberland Corby Blonde, Cullercoats Jack the Devil and Tynebank Southern Star. Absolutely brilliant line up.
Back in the day this was a student pub around the weekends as many student lets are nearby, many a pre party session was had in here. the clientele seem more mixed now, no bad thing. Nostalgia apart, loved it here, good pub, great beer.
