Only a couple of minutes walk from the metro. There were three Big Lamp Ales on handpump on our visit, Prince Bishop, Nels Best and the Big Lamp Bitter. The Big Lamp bitter was superb and priced at £2.35 a pint. The pub consists of a large lounge with bar and a small snug to the rear. The pub has a lot of its original features, I noticed there was an ornate plaster work frieze above the picture rail.
Big Lamp is the oldest micro brewery in Newcastle and started in 1982. Opening times are Mon-Wed 5pm, Thurs 3pm Fri-Sun 12.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Wheat Sheaf
Although not exactly on a back street, this is an old fashioned pub of that type but which is now probably best known as being the second outlet for the Big Lamp Brewery. Four different ales on, including a tasty brew in honour of the Gateshead Thunder rugby team. The pub was quiet in mid-afternoon so I had a good chat with the friendly landlord.

Old style corner boozer. High quality pints of Big Lamp beers (Bitter, Sunny Daze, Prince Bishop). Landlord and lady very friendly. Propper pub interior...even the gents are outside! Well well worth a visit!
