The Travellers Rest reopened on 26 May 2023 as a community-owned pub, having closed in 2008. I'm sure there are very few pubs that have revived after such a lengthy absence. The outside of the building can be seen on old Streetview images; the interior has been very nicely done, with a few bare stone walls but light olive green paint where they've been plastered. Some exposed beams and other woodwork have also been subtly done. The bar is immediately in front on turning left in the porch, with three hand pumps. I was the only one being served from them, but I was only there for 20 minutes for a refreshment stop on my cycle ride from Northallerton to Grinton. I went for the lowest strength beer, which happened to be Community Gold, brewed for the pub by local Mithril brewery, and this hit the spot nicely (NBSS 3.5). The other beers were also local, Richmond Brewery's Parrot 5.2%, an English strong ale which I might have enjoyed if I hadn't been cycling, and their Don't Moch It 4.2% - a chocolate stout.
There are art works on the walls, with price tags. There's a back door to the beer garden, but the main room is up a couple of steps, which means it has a low ceiling, with a further room up some more steps, leading out to a higher level in the garden, where there is a quoits pitch. I don't know if there are plans to do food, but a fish & chip van calls here and at the pubs in Middleton Tyas and Moulton on Fridays. The car park is right in front of the pub, which makes it difficult to get a decent photo of the building, so if anyone happens to be driving (outside of opening hours but in daylight) along the A1 approaching Scotch Corner, please take a little detour on the A6108 west - thanks.
