A largish Youngs pub as mentioned below,it has obviously undergone a modernish makeover in the not so distant past I suspect, yet the bar itself looks more original complete with a well foot worn foot rail. The pub is largely set out with chairs and tables for eating purposes and as such doesn't have a real pubby feel. Four pumps on the bar Youngs Bitter and Special ,Purity Pure Gold,my choice which was decent although £2.00 for a half, I fail to remember the second guest beer.I felt the pub was leaning slightly toward a JDW type feel and as such didn't really warm to it,I personaly wouldn't rush back.

This is a large Young's pub, previously a Hogshead, and originally I understand, a post office, hence the name. The bar runs along one side of the main area, above which is a vaulted beamed ceiling. Mostly wooden boarded flooring but carpeted around the edges and in the front corner raised section. There is another area, if not a separate room, beyond to the rear which is more intimate, having a couple of sofas around a small table, a fireplace and those twinkling lights wound around the chimney breast mirror.
The main area has a fair few high tables, some sofas but a few ordinary tables too. Some exposed brickwork and some decent looking wood panelling. Two TVs each end of the room were showing separate football games but both with the volume on which seemed rather pointless.
There is an extensive paved outdoor area to one side with the usual picnic benches.
Youngs beers as said serving Ordinary Bitter, Special, Bombardier plus Bath Ales Gem which was ok at £3.20 if a touch cold. Youngs and Bath Ales seem to have an arrangement at the moment, not the first time I've found Gem in a Young's pub.
The Penny Black is an adequate town pub but not really offering anything out of the ordinary to remark upon. There aren't too many pubs in Leatherhead town centre though so there isn't much competition to make it up its game. Not a bad pub though and a nice looking building.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Penny Black
Interesting-looking building, and - as suggested by the name - it was formerly Leatherhead's post office. The decor and furniture is typical of the work of Youngs refurbishment team (so that won't be to everybody's taste), but there are plenty of normal tables and chairs in addition to the annoying stuff which seems either too high or too low. Several screens showing sports TV. Four real ales on handpump - Bombardier, Ordinary, London Gold and Special (on good form). The menu isn't cheap (but not that bad for the area), and I ended up stopping for a sandwich with chips which went very nicely with my pint. Overall, for a town-centre pub, I thought this was pretty good.
