Nestled away down a steep hill in what estate agents would describe as a 'well established residential area' lies the Royal Oak. On approach I noted an apologetic note on the door saying that opening hours had been reduced and they were struggling to get beer in. However on entering at the end of a Thursday lunchtime the place seemed healthily busy. The interior was quite characterful; rambling, set over two levels with the bar on the upper. The bar is unusual in that it is not simple to visually navigate due to it being on two levels over what looks like two originally separate rooms. In the end I deduced that there were three pumps to the right and two to left, just too late to order the unspotted Thwaites Lancaster Bomber though the Courage Best I ended up with was fine. Food is big here and I was the only punter solely drinking. To the rear is an impressive sloped grassed garden with two marquee areas, brick BBQ and good solid wood kids play area. Despite the door-documented travails, this is an immediately compelling pub in a way that the Apple Tree isn't.
