I had wondered why the car park here always seemed to be full, but once inside the door the answer is clear: the considerably-extended interior is entirely given over to food, which presumably must be good as it is certainly popular. There is a general comfortable feel however, although the numerous opened out wooden beamed walls are perhaps a little too much like a chain eatery. There is also a huge outdoor area, including some peculiar huts, again aiming mainly at the food trade but with its own outdoor bar in the summer. Beer range not great, although it included a house-badged beer, but possibly depends on the guest ale at the time. Pleasant enough for a pint but probably best avoid peak eating times.

Some serious money has been spent here in upgrading the place (new ownership, no longer C&B). The interior is now more a more streamlined version of a faux country-ambient eatery. Two ales over many pumps (TT Landlord and Doom Bar) both of which were in surprisingly good nick and served by pleasant staff. Real fires (wood stoves) on the go. The grass beer garden at the front of the pub has been kept tidy. Very busy on my Saturday afternoon visit with diners, they must be coining it in here.

Promises a lot more than it delivers – part of the Chef & Brewer chain. The one in Wokingham is very good for beer, so surprised this was so dull really. It’s an old hunting lodge, with a real fire in winter. I found it all rather underwhelming, and my Hogsback was fairly insipid. Rated 4.
