Blue Scrumpy left this review about Cock Inn

The Cock at Brent Eleigh is a pub that I've been looking forward to visiting for some time. It is indeed a classic English pub where very little has changed over the years. Inside, the bar has a single, long table with a long bench against another wall. The set-up clearly promotes conversation. There is just about room for a dartboard.

A second room has a few more tables and a bowed ceiling. There are tiled floors throughout and an old wooden bar stretching through the two rooms. In addition, there is a serving hatch for the small garden area. Toilets are in a separate block to the rear.

Cask ales are served from the rear of the bar. Adnams Southwold Bitter & Greene King Abbot are the regular beers. They also had Adnams Ghost Ship. A price list behind the bar lists real cider and I enquired about which ciders were available. CAMRA's website says that the cider is generally from Castlings Heath Cottage. However, the barman (possibly landlord) said that they hadn't stocked that for many years, as it was rubbish! Instead, they had Weston's Old Rosie & Rosie's Pig. Their Stowford Press was also on keg.

The barman's reaction was actually quite rude and the bad service continued when we tried to order a couple of packs of crisps. The boxes behind the bar indicated what they had, but when we ordered beef, he simply said they don't have any. No problem with this, but it was his tone that was off. Whilst he was being talkative with locals (mostly an elderly generation), he was fairly dismissive of ourselves. I took our glasses to the bar on leaving and said goodbye, but was completely blanked.

Lovely old building, but as the elderly generation begin to disappear, I fear for the future of the pub if any new customers are treated the same way we were. Could easily be a 9/10, as it was with the last review in 2009. But the barman's customer service skills were severely lacking, which ruined our experience.

An unspoilt two-bar gem with thatched roof, listed by CAMRA in their National Inventory. The interior is a timeless classic, with and old off-sales hatch (with some old bar tariffs displayed), pictures of the old town and brasses displayed. Other items of note included a book exchange, basic outside toilets, coal fire and pub Jenga. Three ales – Adnams Bitter, GK Abbot and Elgoods ‘Fresh’ with good beer quality all-round. Local Castlings Heath cider also available. Food offered, with huge sandwiches and jacket pots scoffed by a number of my party. Landlord looked like he was from the Magic Numbers. A classic pub and well-worth your time - amazing that Greene King tried to flog this off as a private house 25 years ago.
