An impressive Victorian building on the site of a former brewery. The large house has a car park at the side, plus a tidy lawned garden and a patio, both with ample space for al fresco drinkers, smokers and unruly brats; all three were in evidence. There is a separate outbuilding which, we were led to believe, houses some sort of skittle alley, though we didn’t see it so can’t be certain. Inside there is a small public bar, the Village Bar, and a larger saloon and dining room combined. The Village bar had gaming machines, one of which was hiding an otherwise functional dartboard, and there was a TV on the bar. There were various sports trophies on display behind the bar indicating that, despite the evidence, this is a reasonable local. Two things spoilt it for us: the poor beer quality and the staff. It’s owned by GK, so the beers were IPA, Bo66y, Back of the Net and Abbot, all in poor condition. The staff, all young and beautiful (in their own eyes of course) were rude, unprofessional and inefficient, while the regulars were not at all welcoming. The principal topic of conversation here was weddings and Love Island. There certainly wasn’t enough here to make us want to come back next time we’re passing.
