The pub is much as described by the last two reviewers, with the paint job mentioned in John's review giving the pub a smarter appearance than it evidently had before. The interior has been well described by Soupy, the only change that struck me being that the music was pretty loud and, in my view, totally unnecessary. There is perhaps a slightly clinical feel to the place, despite its age. It has that un-lived-in quality that a museum has, and could probably do with being a little scruffier, which would make it more like a pub and less like someone's idea of how to make a smart hotel in an old building.
There are six hand pumps on the bar, which is placed inconveniently so that the serving staff don't see customers until they have already negotiated a couple of partitions and a nook or two, this contributing to the slightly unwelcoming feel that the place has. There were four Slaters beers and a guest, which was from Burtonbridge. I wouldn't mind coming back for the opportunity to compare this with the other pubs in Eccleshall, which seems like a pleasant old market town.

A detached Georgian styled (fancy that, with the name!) corner hotel, restaurant and pub, in cream render and green paintwork with some etched windows. It has a patio area. It was a former coaching inn and allegedly older than the facade looks. A regular in the GBG as it is the brewery tap for Slater's beers.
The interior is open plan-ish, but partioned up. It is predominantly in red and white and undressed brick, with beams, depending where you are in the pub. There is a stone flagged floor and a number of small fireplaces. There is a small sofa 'chillax' area (as the soupettes would say) and a restaurant - i didn't eat here so can't comment on the food. There are a few pictures on the walls, but there is a bare feel to the place. The service was fine, the clientele, well a few drinks and diners really and the music was general and quiet.
Beer; tap stuff with Slaters Haka, Arctic, Why Not, Top Totty and a decent Original and Premium on handpull
You feel the place tries to cater for everyone and succeeds to a certain extent, but yet, i left slightly disappointed and i am not really sure why! Definately worth a visit to sample the array of Slaters on offer and i shall return.
