Traditional externally but the Old Peculiar has clearly had a relatively recent refurb inside with wood floors, bare brick walls and mixed solid wood furniture throughout. There's also a bookcase with a varied selection of books which is a nice touch except for the one on Sting.
It makes for a comfortable spot for a pint or something to eat from either the more extensive full menu, excellent value £5 lunch menu or specials board. My £5 lunch was simple but substantial enough and well cooked.
Four handpumps with Old Peculiar, Theakstons Black Bull Bitter and Pedigree available as regulars and an excellent pint of Shugborough Jasper as a guest.
Well worth a visit and I'd drop in again.

Something of a rarity,a Theakston's tied house and many a mile from the brewery in Masham. The clue is in the pub name !The interior is open plan with the bar situated along a back wall in the middle. To the left is a dog leg seating area while to the right there is a raised area with more seating and brickwork left unplastered. The overall affect is pleasingly traditional, with a lounge feel although regulars do gather on the bar stools.
There was a chatty and friendly welcome from behind the bar.Besides Theakston's ales there is a guest ale,in the form of Shugborough Jasper on my trip which tasted great if a little cloudy. On reodering another pint the barman told me he had to stop serving it or he risked loosing his cask marque if their beer police turned up.I switched to Old Peculier which was in top form, and on this evidence this is a pub to visit for quality ale.
There is also a lunchtime £5 special menu which proved both great value and excellent quality, the mains on the regular menu were priced between £7 and £9.
Rightly in the 2013 GBG,beware of the closure on Monday and Tuesday lunchtime and also the afternoon 3 hour break. One of the best drinking options close to the Trent and Mersey Canal,I plan to use the OP on future voyages.

This pub was my local for 6 years up until last month and I have to admit I will not miss it.
The beer is good and priced fairly. The food is average and disappointingly not home-made.
I fully agree with Ivan Dale about the opening times. There have been many occasions where we have had to go for a drink in the The Crown Inn just down the road because The Old Peculiar was shut.
