After having taken the trouble to get to Thorpe Hesley, it was disappointing to say the least that this pub was closed for a "private function". I was tempted to gate crash the party, but I must be starting to mellow, as I instead turned my back and made my way to a pub (i.e. public house) that was actually open to the public: The Horse & Tiger, which now assumes the mantel of "Best Pub in Village".

The Masons Arms is probably the best of Thorpe Hesley's pubs at present. It has a fairly cosy drinking environment in a single room. There were a couple of real ales. These were Landlord & Farmer's Blonde. Locals were gearing up for the England football match later that evening. Fairly ordinary place, but the best the village has to offer.
