In a town like Rotherham, a Wetherspoon's is a God-send. The local CAMRA magazine states that with the closure of the Bridge Inn, the town is left with only 4 pubs selling cask ale in the town centre. The two Chantry pubs are clearly the highlight, but for something different, the Bluecoat is next best.

As Wetherspoon's go, this one doesn't appear too big. However, it is split over 3 levels and there's quite a bit of outdoor seating on a patio to the rear and with the space to the side being converted from a car park to further seating. The pub has exposed stone walls and the usual carpet. A TV was switched off and there were plenty of games machines.

The usual ales were on - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best & Sharp's Doom Bar. Thornbridge Jaipur was off when we arrived but had been poured through by the time we left. Guests were Welbeck Abbey Watermeadow & Cavendish, Beermats Matte Black, St Austell Hicks & Bishop Nick Divine. Ciders on as part of their national cider festival were Rich's Farmhouse Dry, Harry's Corker & Broadoak Moonshine Rum & Raisin. I chose the Matte Black which was my favourite beer of a day in South Yorkshire.

With a more partitioned drinking space than most branches and with good quality beers and ciders, this is certainly one of Rotherham's better pubs.

Just for a change, an atypical 'Spoon's! Tucked away in the backstreets in an historic building, there is one medium-sized room on entry which actually feels like a pub. You have to venture further in to find the larger, more typically Wetherspoon areas downstairs and upstairs, while there is also a fair-sized patio at the back. Most notably, it has an excellent range of ales, with 9 pretty interesting guests and just Abbot from the usuals. We could happily have stayed here and worked through the pumps.

This school conversion does rather look like an original pub. You enter into the bar area which is a smallish rectangular room with a further area on the left down some steps that I didn't venture into.
The bar has ten hand pumps which had a full compliment of the JDW Trio Of Doom, Fuggle Bunny Russian Rare-Bit, Kelham Island Pale Rider, Milestone Luck Of The Irish, Stancill Blonde, Hambleton Cherry Blonde, Hobgoblin and Saltaire Hazelnut Porter. I went for the Pale Rider which was in very good nick.
I thought this was a good Spoons. It's GBG 2017 listed.
