Cheap and cheerful, or at least that's what I wrote in my notes made at the time of my brief visit here last summer. There are two hand pumps on the bar, but they weren't in use - I didn't enquire if they ever were, but it seems strange to keep them there and not use them. The keg version of Wainwright is a little odd, tasting as though it has a dash of lime cordial in it. This is evidently quite a popular shopping street pub, well run and with a lively atmosphere. Not one that I have any desire to return to, though.

An old pub with an interesting frontage but suffering badly from a fairly horrible rebuild of some years ago, leaving a bogus flagstone floor and a smattering of sofas scattered about between decaying formica-topped tables and decaying locals. A pool table stands guard to one side, while overhead there is a large balcony, apparently housing a snooker table. Nothing worth drinking either: keg only and with John Smiths the only bitter. And just to top it off, some dire music added insult to injury. I definitely will not be returning.

The Paris gate is a square open plan pub with a bar on the rear wall where standard draught products can be purchased. The seating is minimal with some sofas and a high table by the entrance. There is a pool table, test your strength boxing machine and a flight of stairs to the left lead up to a balcony area that has a snooker table, not something you see every day in a pub. There are also a couple of plasma screens that were showing Premier League football via BT Sport.
There are a few Doncaster FC flags around the pub and it was busy during my recent Saturday afternoon visit. The weekend of my visit they played on the Friday night so I think that the young boisterous crowd may usually be at the match on a Saturday afternoon.

I found the guy behind the bar to be very friendly, but this isn’t a pub that I will be rushing back to.
