The Lord Nelson is a Craft Union pub that was empty during a recent Tuesday evening visit. There’s a dartboard to the right of the entrance and a pool table sits on a raised area to the right. The serving counter with standard and premium keg runs along the rear wall and a row of high tables run up the centre. There was some background music playing, but at the weekend there’s a DJ who sets up in the booth located in the front left. This place has the set-up and feel of a weekend pub, so not for me.

A town centre pub now being run under the Craft Union banner, with cheap drinks attracting quite a decent crowd early evening. Or perhaps they had come for the singer, who certainly had a belting voice, though I've no idea whose songs she was singing. The beer - no real ale of course: it was John Smiths Smooth - didn't fully live up to the epithet given to it by Alan Winfield many years ago, as it wasn't crap at all. In fact, and I hesitate before typing this in case I cause a crack in the space/time continuum, it was pretty good. And only £2 a pint - or £1 for a half in my case.
The gents toilets, on the other hand, were disgusting. In fact so bad that I mentioned the smell to the lass behind the bar. "It's been like that for years", she replied. So, there must be no cure then, I concluded.
