A proper drinker's pub, that doesn't serve any food. A choice of five ales Acorn St George, Acorn Tunnel Vision, Abbeydale Patron St Ale, Shephard Neame Hop County and Geeves Coloratura. We sat bar side which was situated on the left of the entrance, which had upholstered bench seating similar to the lounge side and a fine collection of Guinness memorabilia on a shelf above the bar counter, in the form of a clock and some jugs. There was also a traditional lounge across the hallway, featuring an old photo of the local miners brass band, outside the pub. Apart from the fine drinking lobby, there was also a good sized pool room which could be found just past the main staircase to the living quarters. A good pub so well worth a visit.

Although called the Market Hotel on Camra's website and referred to locally as the Market Tavern, the signage on this pub names it simply The Market. It's a delightful pub with several different rooms and a drinking corridor, though presumably with not enough of it being original to warrant a place on the inventory of historic interiors. Nevertheless, it's very pleasant and authentic looking, and we received a warm welcome from the equally authentic staff and customers.
The five hand pumps face the room on the left, though service can be had from the corridor. The person serving apologised for the lack of variety in the beer offering - some darker beers in the cellar were not yet ready to come on. I went for the White Rose White Dragon, and with a name like that I wasn't too surprised at how pale it was; not to my taste but in good condition. We were on a crawl of the area so didn't stop, but if there were one pub we would have been happy to return to for a longer session it would be this one.

Solid Victorian terraced local pub easily found as you can follow the brown signs for the Elsecar Heritage Centre which is next door. A multiroom layout with a long room across the front comprising the bar proper to the left and a sitting area to the right as a form of West Riding drinking lobby. Straight ahead is a drinking corridor with a stretch of counter, some tall stools, a TV and a couple of games machines, it also gives access to toilets and the patio. Off the corridor are two back rooms, unusually still with doors, the one to the left has a bar counter. Five handpumps and a range of keg fonts adorn the front counter with just keg fonts on the other faces, the handpumps serve a range from mainly local micros, the only major brand being Deuchars. Judging by the glassware and beer mats Acorn beers are often sold here although I had a difficult choice of excellent beers from Wentworth, Great Newsome and Bradfield when I popped in. Prosaic keg offering although keg John Smiths Magnet was lurking amidst the Carling, Fosters, John Smiths smooth etc. Traditional pub décor and furnishings, the back bar has miniature chairs rather than stools to compliment the bench seating. With excellent beer, a good mix of ages among the customers and friendly staff this GBG listed pub is well worth a visit whither you are visiting the heritage centre or not.
