After a couple of very quiet Sams pubs in Frodsham, this one was a bit of a culture shock- rammed on a Saturday afternoon with a wide range of customers. Very, very good quality OBB on cask and a nice atmospheric hubbub of conversation. The couple next to me were waxing lyrical about their organic lager for being “free of chemicals”. Maybe there is life in the Taddy empire yet, this one at least is in good form.

the calmer of the two Sam Smiths museums in central Chester. this one is at the top of Lower Bridge Street and is well worth fitting in your CAMRA coach trips to this area if you can put up with their ale. it's a time warp inside and it felt like being back in my Grans living room today as I sat surrounded by chattering old women!

The Falcon is a two roomed Sam Smith’s pub with no televisions or music and this SS has no dartboard. The service was polite, but I wasn’t a fan of the multiple signs telling punters what they cannot do. No phones, tablets, laptops, swearing, electronic cigarettes, drunkards or card payments. I was expecting a frosty reception, but who I took to be the landlady was polite. I didn’t see any food advertisements, but cask OBB was available.

One of the two Sam's pubs in Chester, this is a lovely Tudor era half-timbered building in the usual black and white colourings. The blue plaque outside says it was done up from derelict in the early 1980s and a fine job they did. Three rooms inside, the left one is quite loungey and was busy on our late evening visit. There’s then a mid-section public bar and what’s best described as a ‘banquette room’ down some stairs, all done-out in a ‘burnt cream’ colour scheme as mentioned below. Usual Sams produce, including cask OBB which was pretty good (NBSS 3.5), something not always guaranteed in their places. We propped up the bar and gabbed with the engaging and chatty staff who knew the Humph and experienced his eccentricities first hand a few months previously. A nice place, this one. 7.5
