With Message in a Bottle, No. 1 Pub & the Signal Box Inn all closed midweek, this Wetherspoon's turned out to be the best pub we found in Cleethorpes. It is a former cinema and nightclub over a couple of floors (stairs at the rear).

The usual range of regular beers was on - Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar & Thornbridge Jaipur, in addition to 3 guests - Pheasantry Excitra, Vale Gravitas & Salem Dark Fruits Porter. The latter was a fantastic beer in excellent condition. To add to my pleasure, there were also 4 traditional ciders - Weston's Old Rosie, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon, Snail's Bank Rhubarb Cider & Sandford Orchards Cherry. The Cherry cider was one I'd not tried before. Although, it was a bit on the weak side at 3.4%

We visited either side of an evening game at Grimsby Town's Blundell Park and at both times it was much quieter than a standard Wetherspoon's, which made it quite a pleasurable drinking experience. The bar manager also seemed quite knowledgeable and wants to promote the cider. It's centrally located and would certainly be my first port of call when visiting this seaside town. I'm amazed the local CAMRA people haven't listed it in the Good Beer Guide since 2017.

A surprisingly-pleasant Spoons for a resort, with a nicely decorated and furnished interior featuring windows on to the cool room stillage at the back. The upstairs area is spacious and there is a roof terrace also. Guest ales were Jaipur, Hook Norton Double Stout and two from Yorkshire Heart - Yorkshire Brown Ale and Rhu-bar-beer.

A 2014 opener, this nightclub (via cinema) conversion is an unusually discreet Spoons though once inside it opens out a bit and includes a mezzanine level and, I now read, a roof garden which I’m sad not to have noticed and explored. Some interwar and Romanesque décor stylings and the rear booths are very tidy. Three guest cask (all southern which made me wince a bit), my Elgoods was, whilst seemingly conditioned fine, quite a vile tasting concoction (NBSS 1.5). I’m reluctant to lay the blame fully at the pub’s door here as I’ve encountered many a rotten Elgoods in my time, it is the most hodophobic of breweries. But it has cost a higher mark.
