One of the few remaining Wincanton coaching inns, The Bear now has little in the way of outside areas other than a small garden at the side and a large car park. The single bar is carpeted and well lived-in, has exposed timbers and a pleasant atmosphere. There is an original stone fireplace hidden behind a church pew and a small modern woodburner in another fireplace. Basic pub grub appeared to be good value. The clientele were a mixed bunch, mainly locals enjoying a quiet pint, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Four handpumps on the bar: one was dry, the others dispensed Orchard Pig Reveller, Exmoor Ale and Tribute, reasonably well-kept but the Exmoor was nearing the end of its shelf-life. A decent local, not too grizzly, worth dropping in for a pint or a cheap lunch.

Called in for a swift lunchtime pint - very pleasant 'olde worlde' town pub that is clean and comfortable. Very friendly bar staff. Menu isn't pretentious and offers normal pub grub and an extensive range of bar snacks all at very reasonable prices. The Ringwood Best was in tip-top condition with two other pumps standing by. Better than average but certainly not a 10/10 like the last review - that elusive pub only exists in my dreams!

Friendly staff & locals, at least Abbot and IPA with occasional guest ales, and very good food.
