As described by Jonathan, below, the pub meanders around internally, the various rooms – two dining rooms and the bar – separated by labyrinthine corridors and ancient walls. Whilst the traditional serving hatch is long gone, the bar nonetheless has a character of its own and makes for a very pleasant place to sit and enjoy the beer and conviviality. The owners are engaging and good company, going out of their way to chat to us and make us feel welcome. Even the pub dog, a mildly stroppy pug, warmed t our presence and was happy to sit with our three dogs. I certainly liked it here, and it’s a shame their ale sales are unpredictable, meaning they limit their range to reduce losses. Otter Ale had just finished and no replacement was ready, leaving Palmer’s Gold as the only choice, but it was an excellent pint in perfect condition. The keg choices were Poretti, Guinness and San Miguel, and possibly a cider though that wasn’t very clear. It is a bit off the beaten track and not easy to find the first time you visit, but I’d be very glad to come back if the opportunity presented itself.

The lack of bar has been replaced with a bar now so lost it's character now from a no bar review below to which I made a special visit to do on route to Torquay for Easter. Non the less very pleasant old collection of corridors and rooms which lead to the rear to garden area and car park which given the Easter weather they were having a BBQ in the garden. It is a little off the beaten track and while observing the road signs off the A38 to get there Appley soon vanishes so in favour of other villages so maybe one for the Sat Nav to take control of to get there.

Would visit again if in area but disappointed the barless character has been lost with bar now in front right room on entry from the front door on the road.

Lovely old off-the-beaten-track country pub. There is no bar, just a serving hatch in the hallway, and two or three separate comfortable rooms. Always two or three real ales available; food also, and a beer garden
