A rather pleasant small town inn, well described by Blackthorn, below. It provides excellent pub food at a reasonable price, plus takeaway pizzas. Ales on this visit were Cheddar Ales’s Bitter Bully and Butcombe Original, both in good condition, and there were two redundant pumps on the bar. Craft lagers from Kicking Goat and Lost & Grounded were also on offer, plus Thatcher’s Rascal and Gold, and Guinness. There was also an industrial coffee machine for those so inclined. Well worth a visit

A traditional looking Georgian inn in the centre of Wedmore, there are a few tables and chairs on the wide pavement at the front if you want to sit and watch the passing traffic, but otherwise the large garden and patio at the rear is probably a better bet for alfresco drinking. The garden also housed a large wood burning stove, so I assume some sort of outdoor cooking is offered in the warmer weather.
The pub itself is roughly a U-shape, with the left hand leg leading down to the restaurant. In some ways it has a slightly contemporary feel to it, but nonetheless manages to retain much of it’s original character. There are old boards on the floor at the front of the pub with flagstones around to the side. Paintwork is the usual Farrow & Ball shades found in all pub makeovers these days, and there were a number of large mirrors on the walls as well as plenty of scatter cushions on the seats. Further back at the rear was a snug area with an old Chesterfield sofa and a large rug on the floor. A couple of fire-places contained wood burning stoves, one of which was blazing away and the other had a pile of logs stacked up ready to go.
The restaurant at the rear is perhaps a more modern extension, but was a pleasant looking room with a high arched ceiling and good views over the garden. There were plenty of accolades from Trip Advisor and such like on the walls suggesting that the food offering is a step or two up from your usual pub grub, and this was reflected in the prices with most of the main courses going from £12 up to £20 or more.
Beers on tap were Otter Ale, Gem, Penryn Pale Ale and Cheddar’s Pot Holer, whilst ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Sheppy’s Oakwood. Although this might not be quite as traditional as some pubs, I really liked it and thought it would be a great place to settle in for the afternoon reading the complimentary papers that were provided.
