An historic village pub dating from the early 17th Century. There is a car park at the back and a terrace at he front with tables and benches. It appears that there was a beer garden previously next to the current car park but that a new building has been put there, presumably the B&B accommodation which is newly on offer. Inside there is a dining room and a single L-shaped bar formed from two original rooms; the demarcation is still visible through a low step which is a bit of a trip hazard. The barman and some of the locals were chatty, and we felt very welcome here. As a village social hub they offer regular bingo evenings and occasional quiz nights. Live music is also a feature. Four handpumps were dispensing Tribute, Butcombe’s Haka, Sambrook’s IPA and Farmer Jim’s cider. On keg there was a wide selection – Red Stripe, Sam Adam’s, Thatcher’s Haze, Guinness, Heineken and Mena Dhu Stout. The real ales were in perfect condition, and we were invited to taste them all before choosing. Lunch is only offered on some lunchtimes, so we were unable to try the food which is, apparently, locally sourced and freshly cooked. Excellent, well worth the small deviation from the main road to find.
